Otherwise Christian is written by me, Jason Coker. Among other things, I am a progressive Christian pastor and scholar whose research lies at the intersection of missiology, decoloniality, intercultural theology, anthropology of religion, and human development. This site is where I explore these topics and how they point toward emerging possibilities for the future of faith in the American Global North.

Alongside my wife and partner Jenell, I serve as the Co-Lead Pastor of The Oceanside Sanctuary, a progressive Christian church in Oceanside, California. I am ordained with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) but before that was originally ordained with the Vineyard Community of Churches before a long period of renegotiating my faith and sense of vocation. I earned my M.A. from Fuller Theological Seminary, where I am currently conducting Ph.D. research on the rise of women’s religious disaffiliation in the U.S. as a symptom of the coloniality of gender in American Global North Christianities. Since 2013, I have also served as a part-time member of the Human Development faculty at California State University San Marcos, where I teach human development theories, social policy, anti-racism, and human services leadership.
